Two sets
Set A - The drummer in this set was "JC". The very first words out of JC's mouth as we met onstage were, I'm not kidding, "Please don't make me play a shuffle." At a *blues* jam? Are you *yankin'* me?!?)
Shawn Radford played second guitar this set. Shawn is a rock-n-roller who always wants the next song to be in "E" and groans if any other key is called, and pretty much ignores the blues-rhythm feel of the song -- and since the singer, Mark Collen, has never met a shuffle or a swing he didn't like, this was a tough set in which to map out common ground.
But darn if the second tune (Keep Your Motor Runnin' (128k | 320k)) didn't manage to come out pretty well in spots anyway!. The first tune, though (Watch Out (128k | 320k)), suffered a severe slowdown right off the bat, losing the energy that the song usually exudes. There was some OK stuff in there over the course the song though.
But other than Set A's "Keep Your Motor Runnin'", what you really want to hear is the second set, with the host band, CD Woodbury on guitar, Steve Ater on bass and Tommy Cook on drums.
"Kansas City" (128k | 320k) and "Sweet Home Chicago" (128k | 320k) are especially cool, with "Flip, Flop and Fly/Pack Fair & Square" (128k | 320k) a close runner-up.
In the "WTF is up with THAT!?!!?" department, check out "Long Grey Mare" (128k | 320k) with Wes __(last name?)__. The award for "Most Annoying Guitar Sound In Living Memory" goes to the rhythm guitar on this song. This was supposed to be a swing shuffle, but Wes was playing an unfamiliar rig, and there was some kind of vibrato or tremolo or something that made it sound like a polka was raping a swing shuffle. Ack! Not for the faint of heart.
Mark Collen plays guitar on all tracks, sings on some, CD Woodbury sings on some, and they *both* sing on one.
